SUSPECT MY TEARS
“I learned a trick that you used to play
I’m tired of you having it your own way
With the power to persuade
Beginning to cascade”
– SUSPECT MY TEARS
Not always having a reason to put music on the page, I’m always delighted when a recording session comes out as I’ve heard it in my head.
I could not have asked more from our New York players on “Suspect My Tears”, the string section sounding as rich and full as twice their number.
When I was a kid listening to Tamla and Philly recordings, like those produced by Thom Bell, I always imagined they were played by massive symphony orchestras in a cathedral-like space.
I realize now that is what reverb is for.
Recording in New York, I was also able to call on Michael Rabinowitz, one of the world’s finest (and it has to be said rarest) jazz bassoonist to play on both “Under Lime” and “Suspect My Tears”.
Although both parts were in my original orchestrations, I asked Michael if he would do a take on which he departed from the written notes in final refrains of “Suspect My Tears”.
Suspect My Tears
Do you remember how to say “Please”?
You’ve had your own way for such a long time
Your lashes sweep down
I dry your cheek
You think I’m powerless when you speak
You may have something, I don’t deny
You look so beautiful when you cry
If I seem unconcerned
Perhaps it’s time you learned
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
You’re not the only one who can turn it on
When you need it
Do you remember how bad it felt?
Big eyes would fill up
Your lip would tremble
You want to hurt me but then you melt
You always promise to lose control
I learned a trick that you used to play
I’m tired of you having it your own way
With the power to persuade
Beginning to cascade
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
You’re not the only one who can turn it on
When you need it
If you hear me weeping
I may be cheating or just laughing inside
If you’re suspicious
That I’m sly and vicious
Here’s your chance to decide
Two hypocrites collide
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
You’re not the only one who can turn it on
When you need it
I’ll cry until you suspect my tears
