De wereld wordt melig op valentijn. Wie een gebroken hart torst, kan op die ellendige dag dag gelukkig troost vinden bij Elvis Costello.
I Want You. Dankzij Costello doen die drie woorden je geloven dat liefde en verlangen ook slepende ziektes zijn, waarna je jezelf achteraf alleen maar kan opdweilen. “Toch komt die bittere boodschap niet altijd juist aan”, grinnikt Declan MacManus, het vlees en bloed achter Elvis Costello. “Dat net díé song als openingsdans wordt gebruikt bij huwelijken… Ik buig deemoedig het hoofd, en kan die mensen alleen maar een behouden vaart wensen.” (lacht)
De eerste halve minuut zet Elvis nochtans zijn warmste impressie van een zwijmelende crooner neer. Liefde bezwangert de lucht. Tot een scherpe twang op gitaar komaf maakt met die zeemzoete sfeer. Costello blikt met een rauwe snik in zijn stem terug op bedrog en onbeantwoorde liefde. “Meer dan dertig keer herhaal ik dat eenvoudige zinnetje. I want you. Maar het volgt op elk verbitterd verwijt, waarbij de getormenteerde verteller in detail verhaalt over de ontrouw van zijn geliefde. Alleen: ondanks alle ellende zoekt hij dus nog steeds comfort in die oude liefde, zelfs al is ze compleet verneukt.”

The world is beating on valentine. Those who have a broken heart can happily find solace at Elvis Costello on that miserable day.
I Want You. Thanks to Costello, those three words make you believe that love and desire are also lingering illnesses, after which you can only mop up afterwards. “But that bitter message is not always right,” says Declan MacManus, the flesh and blood behind Elvis Costello. “That just that song is used as opening dance in weddings … I humbly bow my head, and can only wish those people a safe journey.” (Laughs)
In the first half minute, however, Elvis puts down his warmest impression of a fading crooner. Love is filling the air. To make a sharp twang on guitar makes with that sea-sweet atmosphere. With a raw sob, Costello looks back at deception and unrequited love in his voice. “More than thirty times I repeat that simple sentence. I want you. But it follows every bitter reproach, in which the tormented narrator tells in detail about the unfaithfulness of his beloved. Only: despite all the misery he still seeks comfort in that old love, even if she is completely annoyed.”
