Jimmie, standing in the rain: Manchester Apollo June 14th

The Afterword: Benny Philadelphia: 15th June, 2013.

Here he is again, our beloved entertainer imagining his future from Accrington station back in 1937 though tonight he's years from being a forgotten man in an indifferent nation. There's no plaintive whistling, no Brilliatine glistening and unfortunately he steers clear of the prairie lullabies that I'm partial to. He speaks of his dad doing the northern circuit of working men's clubs but he's here on the Apollo stage singing his heart out, playing with passion, humour and those beyond belief words. There's Bedlam, a brilliant mistake, a poisoned rose, a battered old bird, Tokyo storm warnings and, as usual, he's not kidding about any of it despite the cane and top hat of vile vaudeville. On his Desert Island Discs appearance Elvis chose his dad singing 'At Last' and wouldn't it be a good thing for us to have a recording of our dads' singing. Elvis' 3 sons will have lots to choose from. A long way from walking off to jeers and the sound of jingling spurs. He's still mighty, magnificent
